魯弗斯・瓊斯（作家）

魯弗斯·馬修·瓊斯（Rufus Matthew Jones，1863年1月25日－1948年6月16日）是美國的宗教領袖、作家、雜誌編輯、哲學家和大學教授。他在哈弗福德緊急救援隊（美國公誼服務委員會的前身）的成立過程中扮演了關鍵角色。作為二十世紀最具影響力的貴格會成員之一，他既是貴格會的歷史學家和神學家，也是一位哲學家。他是唯一一位發表過兩次斯沃斯莫爾講座的人。

早年生活與教育

瓊斯出生於緬因州南中國鎮的一個貴格會世家，他在那裡參加了池塘聚會所的禮拜，後來又去了新建的南中國鎮聚會所。1885年，他畢業於賓夕法尼亞州的哈弗福德學院，並於1886年留校獲得文學碩士學位。1893年至1912年，他擔任《教友評論》（後改名為《美國教友》）的編輯；在此職位上，他試圖團結分裂的貴格會團體，但未成功。1901年，瓊斯在哈佛大學獲得了另一個文學碩士學位。他也於1893年開始在哈弗福德學院教授哲學與心理學，直到1934年退休。1898年至1936年，他擔任布林茅爾學院的董事會成員。

職業生涯

1917年，他協助創立了美國公誼服務委員會（AFSC）。1927年，瓊斯應基督教青年會（YMCA）之邀前往亞洲旅行。他的主要目的是向在中國的傳教士發表演說，但途中也在日本、印度和巴勒斯坦停留。在印度期間，瓊斯拜訪了聖雄甘地和佛陀的誕生地。這次旅行幫助瓊斯形成了一種新的傳教方式——在尊重其他宗教、不強行使人皈依自己宗教的同時，為人們提供人道主義援助。1938年，在水晶之夜事件後，瓊斯與同為貴格會成員的喬治·沃爾頓和D·羅伯特·亞納爾一同前往納粹德國，試圖說服蓋世太保允許美國公誼服務委員會援助當地的猶太人。

1947年，瓊斯前往斯德哥爾摩，代表貴格會領取諾貝爾和平獎。

瓊斯努力撫平十九世紀教友會分裂所帶來的創傷，並取得了一些成功。瓊斯大量撰寫關於神秘主義的文章，這是貴格會信仰的主要面向之一。1948年，他被惠提爾學院授予榮譽文學博士學位（Litt.D.）。

他區分了否定性神秘主義（與非人格化的力量接觸）和肯定性神秘主義（與人格化的存在接觸）。他主張上帝是一個人格化的存在，人類可以與之互動。他在《中年生活軌跡》中寫道：「［神秘主義］的本質特徵是，個人達成一種親身體驗的確信，即人的靈與神聖之靈相遇、相互尋見，並作為靈與靈相互對應與交流。」在區分否定性與肯定性神秘主義的同時，他也斷言，所有否定性神秘主義者偶爾會採取肯定性的途徑，而所有肯定性神秘主義者也時而會走上否定性的道路。他對神學家霍華德·瑟曼的人生與工作產生了重大影響，後者曾在1929年至1930年間師從於他。

瓊斯是平信徒委員會的成員，該委員會考察了亞洲的傳教區，並發表了《反思傳教：百年後的平信徒調查》（1932年）。該調查的結論反映了上文所述他的觀點。

瓊斯曾是羅德島州普洛威頓斯市中央公理教會的客座講道人。

瓊斯於1948年在賓夕法尼亞州哈弗福德市去世，享年85歲。
