SR 197的編號於1923年啟用。最初的路線大致沿著現今的路線，從塞萊納市中心的西端點，到斯潘塞維爾南方的66號州道交會處。1937年，SR 197向東延伸，沿著先前由郡維護的道路，到達現今位於198號州道的東端點。<br />
